How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

5.0 out of 5 starsA Very Useful Lens
Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2023
This is a small, light, all purpose lens useful as a wide angle on full-frame Z bodies or a standard lens on APS-C Z bodies or full-frame bodies in Dx crop mode. It is a pleasure to carry mounted on my Z7ii for street or landscape photography, far better than the usual heavy, bulky Z lenses. Images exhibit no distortion in any way except at extreme close-ups, which is to be expected and even welcomed. And, it’s very sharp, right up there with all the f/1.8 Z lenses.

3.0 out of 5 starsMixed feelings….
Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2023
This lens is beautifully sharp in the center. Remarkable really given it’s size. It feels really high quality and even though it does make noise, it’s much quieter than I expected. It didn’t affect my shooting or get in the way. Two things did get in my way. First the corners never get sharp, even when stopped down. It’s it’s definitely noticeable compared to my Nikon 35mm 1.8s which is amazing. I was willing to make that compromise as long as everything else was good. The lens is weightless and I loved having it on the camera. Unfortunately The Nikon 26mm 2.8 has awful autofocus in low light. I needed to take 2-3 shots before it focused properly. This issue makes it unusable in the field as I had zero confidence this lens could focus in low light. It affected my entire night of low light shooting. Based on those two issues I had to return it. It’s possible there was a issue with my copy but I doubt it as it was shipped with care and hand delivered by Amazon.

If you like the Ricoh GRIII then you might love this lens. It’s extremely similar except the GR III is sharper in the corners. It also has a lot of vignetting just the like GR III.

I personally wish the made the lens a little bit bigger which would have increased corner sharpness and perhaps allowed it to have a better autofocus motor/performance.

If you can spend the extra $100 over the 28mm, do it. I can now carry my z6 in a fanny pack. I use my camera significantly more now!

I like this Pancake prime lens, it is so compact and light. The lens cover is very easy to cover but also easy to came off.

Sharp photos with any Nikon Z series camera, but I find it most useful with my my Z50. Together, they make a great compact walking around or hiking duo

I wanted to have a lens for my Z7ii and Z6ii that would make them easy to carry for street and casual photography. The lens cap is friction held with felt and gets knocked off a lot. Interestingly the filter size is 52mm which is what most of my old film Nikkors used so I have many filters that fit.

Greg
4.0 out of 5 stars Nice 26 pancake with some design compromise
Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2024

I bought both the 26 f2.8 and 40 f2. I think I received a very good copy of the 26, but not the 40 (could not get the 40 to focus on specific point so returned it).

The 26 is a very nice little lens, but there are some design and usability compromises. The optical element extends/retracts a bit, the lens hood twists on with a soft lock but there is no hard lock/click, and when a filter is attached it is attached to the lens hood rather than to the lens itself (since optical element retracts/extends). So, when you have the lens hood with filter attached, it looks like 4 section lens: lens body, focus ring, lens hood, filter extending from lens hood. The lens hood looks like a dummy focus ring. The flexible plastic lens cap slides over the lens hood/filter if attached, or if not, it slides over the focus ring. It is a friction fit lens cap. The lens cap may seem different, but I like it since it is very easy and convenient to remove and put on.

Chalk up some design oddities to have a slim pancake with very good image quality - creative Nikon engineers...

And of course, the price of $450-500 is a con - more expensive than the 28 ($275)

Note prices of other lenses (new - much larger primes):
24mm f1.8 S $1,000
24mm f1.8 $750
20mm f1.8 $800

Overall, I am very happy with the 26 and initial images.

As for the 26 v 28, I don't have the 28.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great pancake lens

Absolutely great optics in an awesome pancake lens form. The auto-focus sounds are not exaggerated by other folks, it is very noticeable. It's fine if your shooting stills obviously but it will definitely make itself known during video shooting.

As much as I wanted this lens, I felt the price was way too high for a prime non-S line lens. Perhaps if this goes on sale, I'll think about buying again but the price was constantly on my mind when using this lens
