Beast of an enclosure!!

I’ve bought and tested a bunch of SSD enclosures in the past. This enclosure by UGreen is the absolute pinnacle of enclosures. The built quality, silicone sleeve, aesthetics, and functionality makes it a mile above others. I’ve included some pics from testing another enclosure and you can see the difference. This other enclosure is no slouch either. It’s one of the best on the market. The UGreen beats it out with ease. For reference, I’m using a WD black SN850x 2TB ssd, tested on a M2 Apple Studio. Couldn’t be happier with my purchase!!!!

Item was bought for a customer. Tested with crystal mark on a new 2 TB NVME 7,500 MBps speeds, new motherboard with latest BIOS and drivers. Files transferred 10 GB for a total of 70 GB in one transfer in Windows 11 pro. While tested speeds (in CrystalMark) barely reach 2030 MBps, real transfer rates max out at about 680 MBps. The worst part however is that during file transfer, the transfer would reach the max speed for less than a second then the speed would drop to 0 (zero) MBps for 45 seconds to a minute after which the transfer would resume. During the time the transfer stops, computer is unusable (frozen?). The entire exercise makes file transfer unreliable with this enclosure. It actually performs worse than other enclosures with older chips we tested with in the same configuration. What a waste of time.

Update: It can be able to mount to Linux through thunderbolt. Just need password authorization.

1) Thunderbolt won't work with current Mac with M1 or Linux, you need either fall back to USB3.0 (Mac), or turn off thunderbolt (linux). That's why so many computer inverse genius complained about speeds. If you really need 40GB speed it claims, think about something else.

2) The 3 plastic feet are really flimsy. Not sure when it will break.

3) The inner frame is plastic. Also the screw to hold SSD is way too low (the slot to SSD edge). There's angle when ssd is mounted which will apply extra force to card edge connector. Probably it won't last longer.

4) The plus side, and the only one: It runs really cool. Read write 300GB and still cool.

As a serious computer user with a need for speed, I jumped at the chance to upgrade my setup with the UGREEN 40Gbps M.2 NVMe Enclosure.

Once I experienced the speed, stability and reliability inherent in Thunderbolt, I decided to swap out my tech over time to this much improved standard. I like the build of this device and the addition of the cooling fan which helps to keep heat down.

It works well with my current NVMe SSDs, and once you seen the speed increases of USB 4.0, you'll never want to go back to the slower legacy USB devices. The UGREEN 40Gbps M.2 NVMe Enclosure is an outstanding piece of kit, and one that I heartily recommend.

UGREEN is a major electronics brand in China, so I always support its products because they are made with care. The workmanship of this hard drive box is also very good. It is made of metal instead of cheap plastic. It even comes with a soft protective cover. Because the mobile hard drive will be moved frequently, it will inevitably be scratched by collisions. The protective cover is very good. It protects your metal hard drive case and has a shockproof effect. This installation is also very simple. It comes with installation tools and does not require you to prepare it yourself. It also comes with two cables, one is a 40G type-c to type-c cable, and the other is a 10G type-c to usb-a cable. The cables are also very thick. It also comes with a fan, which ensures good cooling of your hard drive and makes very little noise. You won’t even hear the fan sound unless you put the hard drive to your ear. Regarding work, it only has a small reminder light, and there is no fancy RGB light. The hardware I tested this time is:
1TB WD 850x
The computer is a 2019 macbook pro 16 inch and the cpu is i9
The other one is macbook mini m1
I found that the macbook pro 16-inch test result is only 2g more than one second to read and write, which is a bit disappointing. However, when tested with m1, it can reach 3G, but it is still a short distance away from the target 4G, but I believe it is because of my computer problem, and It's not that this hard drive box can't reach it, because I read in the comments below that someone has tested that it can reach 3.6G.
Disadvantages: Severe heating, thick thickness, and very heavy weight.

Thermal pad was missing

The product arrived in perfect condition. However the thermal pad was missing. Amazon support was kind enough to give me a 5$ discount in the purchase so i'll use that to cover the pads. UGreen needs to check what's going on with the packing because the thermal pads are missing

From 5 stars to 0 stars... after BIOS and firmware updates on Win 10 and 11 Pro

I wish I could explain what happened other than BIOS and TB AIC (GB Titan Ridge rev 1 and 2) upgrades. Our studio had 4 of these UGREEN enclosures, which were the best TB4 enclosures yet (due to ASM2464PD TB/USB controller). Then we updated BIOS and firmware (GB Designare TRX40 and some ASROCK and ASUS X570 mobos), the Intel TB software (updated) no longer saw the enclosures (containing various gen 4 WD, Seagate, Crucial, and Sabrent NVMEs) as TB, only as USB 3.x, VERY strange. We reverted to our older Sabrent and Acasis TB3 enclosures, which continued to work fine in TB after all the updates. So 5 stars before the updates, zero after, average of 3 stars.

UGREEN followed up with a kind offer of refund, but Amazon had already refunded our purchase of four of these enclosures. As noted above, the enclosures worked perfectly before Windows and BIOS updates... still not sure what happened.
