Lert's not mince words.. Rotring is the Rolls Royce of functional mechanical pencils. There are of course much more expensive luxury pencils on the market and I've tried a lot of them. I have not purchased the more expensive luxury versions but I have friends that indulge, so I have borrowed some (they're insane letting me borrow a $4000.00 pencil) for a day just to test. FYI That pencil was actually a set. so that dollar amount bought 4 instruments. it was the Graf von Faber-Castell Elemento Limited Edition set.
Now, the luxury pencils need to be eliminated from this review because they are simply not a viable option for 99% of the planet. I think I'd opt for something much different for that price. but not only that, those instruments are built for style and class, not necessarily function. In fact, I prefer the items I'm listing below to any of the expensive items I've tried.
I narrowed down my search to a handful. The Pentel Graph Gear 500. The Pentel Graph Gear 1000, the Rotring 600 and the Rotring 800.
The Pentel's are nice pencils, and they work great. But frankly they are not in the same class as the Rotrings and that is fairly represented in the price. They don't have the weight and balance.
My primary goal was the feel of the pencil. We know they will all work, and honestly i don't care how they work, as long as they do. the mechanism for making them work while great from an engineering standpoint is largely irrelevant from a usability standpoint. My requirement?Read more ›
The large problem had to do with the widely experienced issue of the lead breaking off inside the tip. I researched Amazon reviews to see if other users were having the same issue and was surprised by the amount that were. I considered returning the product for a refund but got to thinking. As an engineer I asked myself "For such a generally well engineered product, obviously the designers wrote with their product and would notice a huge problem like the lead constantly breaking, right?" So I took the pencil apart and immediately noticed an issue... If you unscrew the knurled grip from the hexagonal body you'll find the lead holder inside. At the end is a brass tip screwed to the lead holder. This brass tip was not screwed to the lead holder securely and was able to wiggle/bend when touched. During shipping or assembly, I guess the two pieces became loose. By screwing the brass tip to the lead holder tightly, I have had no lead break off in the tip.
The small problem I mentioned has to do with the wider than desired tolerance between the retractable tip and the pencil body itself. When writing, the tip has a small bit a play in it and doesn't feel entirely rigid. Others have also noticed this problem. Because this is a manufacturing tolerance issue with the retractable tip option on the 800 model, I can't see a way to remedy the issue. I have a co-worker with a Rotring 600, and it doesn't have this issue. Because of this small tolerance issue for such an expensive pencil, I give this product 4 stars.
So they've really made a lot of changes to this pencil since they released the 800+ serious with the stylus tip, which the 800 is basically identical to, minus the stylus tip.
First off, the internal barrel is 100% metal now so you don't have to worry about it breaking, hopefully.
The tip fits SNUGGLY now. So it doesn't move anymore like the old models. I mean, the tip does wiggle ever so slightly if you grasp the writing tip with your fingers and move it around, but you'll never notice move while you're writing. Well, at least I don't anyway. All things considered, the tolerances are pretty great and there's almost an imperceptible amount of play that won't break your lead. So they did a good job.
The click mechanism to extend the tip is solid and it doesn't seem like it will break anytime soon (hopefully). It gives kind of a dull thunk when you twist it into place. Also, it's spring loaded so when you want the tip to return to the retracted position, it does so with the aid of the spring after unclicking the tip from the extended position. I think it's pretty cool because it ensures the pencil stays in the retracted position while it's in your pocket.
I've been using it for a few months and it has yet to break lead within the pencil.
It's been very solid thus far and it's heavy, but not as heavy as the Rapid Pro. So it's great to write with and it doesn't hurt my hands. It's clear that this is a luxury item and it's built very well. I also really like the brass accents, which I get a lot of comments about.
The balance on this thing is really nice. It just sits very well in the crook of my hand.Read more ›

Just purchased this Rotring 800 in 0.5 mm lead and I'm utterly disappointed. I don't know if I got a lemon or what but this pencil will not advance the lead. Read morePublished 20 days ago by Hunter T Cottrell

Rotring nailed it. Some complain of the retractable tip movement. It does move but it's negligible. I've had zero lead breakage because of it.Published 1 month ago by Frank
I really do like this pencil, that being said you don't want to advance the lead past 1-2 clicks at a time or it can break but really 3 clicks of lead is more than you want or need... Read morePublished 1 month ago by Amazon Customer
