The story is more interesting in that the author uses day-to-day experiences inside the "terror" that we would not otherwise know or even consider. For example, the general attitude of the aristocracy was to assume the "trouble" would pass and leave them in peace and the arrogant attitude that they should venture to Paris to assist the King! There will come a time in the late 18th century when all people of France were at risk of "the lady" with the blade.
All in all, this is not only an enjoyable novel but a step into the past history of true terror. Well worth the read in the 19th century and 21st as well.
