El libro ofrece un estudio histórico-canónico de las fuentes e iter redaccional de los cánones 1065 y 1066 del Código de 1917, que tratan del llamado matrimonio cum indignis (los que notoriamente abandonaron la fe, miembros de asociaciones condenadas, censurados y pecadores públicos). El estudio se completa con el análisis de tres pronunciamientos de la Santa Sede sobre la admisión al matrimonio de los que ignoran la doctrina cristiana (1918), de los miembros de sectas ateístas (1934) y de los comunistas (1949), llegando así hasta los umbrales del Concilio Vaticano II. Ante la situación pastoral de los que se acercan a las bodas con escasa fe personal, se busca una especie de verificación, a la luz de las fuentes, de la afirmación de la Exhortación apostólica Familiaris consortio de que establecer criterios de admisión al matrimonio que tengan en cuenta el grado de fe de los futuros contrayentes está en contradicción con la tradición eclesial. Se aporta la documentación inédita sobre la Codificación de 1917 y dos interpretaciones auténticas (de 1918 y 1934) encontrada en el Archivo Secreto Vaticano, el Archivo del Pontificio Consejo para los Textos Legislativos y el Archivo Histórico de la Pontificia Universidad Gregoriana. Al final se realiza una síntesis conclusiva con algunas propuestas. El libro proporciona a la luz de las fuentes una contribución a la reflexión sobre la relación entre la fe y el matrimonio, pues los cánones correspondientes del vigente Código de 1983 reproducen sustancialmente los estudiados del Código de 1917.
