Taking a dive into the sewer,

This review is from: Cinema Sewer: The Adults Only Guide to History's Sickest and Sexiest Movies! (Paperback)
This is a strange one.
It's obvious quite quickly that Cinema Sewer is not going to be a book for everyone. In fact, it's probably going to be a book for only a certain crowd, those who like either porn movies or really cheesy exploitation (particularly horror) films. I fit into that latter group.
A compilation of articles from the magazine of the same name, Cinema Sewer contains a lot of information about porn films, probably more than most people would ever want to know. These are not simply films of guy-and-girl (or guy-and-guy or girl-and-girl) sex: the reader gets reviews of films that deal with all sorts of sadism, masochism and some rather scatological things too. Much of which is illustrated by artist (and principal writer and editor) Robin Bougie (and lots of photos too, though generally not reproduced well).
It ain't all porn, however. There are also reviews of other exploitation films, such as the various "Mondo" and "Faces of Death" movies and lots of horror films too, often low-budget movies from the 1960s and 1970s, when exploitation/grindhouse films were at their peak. Beyond reviews, we get some biographies, especially of porn actresses, which make it readily apparent that the life of such actresses are rather sordid. There are also articles about various related material such as a history of the anti-porn movement and whether snuff films exist.
I'm not much of a pornography fan, and I think even many who are might be repelled by some of the material in this book. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the book overall. Bougie and company have an obvious enthusiasm for this material, an appreciation for the trashy films that carries over to the reader. It will expose the daring reader to some unexplored areas of the cinema world (in particular, the cinema sewer).
