I was all sorts of excited to receive this little box of tricks. This was the wonder item that would allow me to finally retire my noisy HTPC! It was going to be fantastic, and (more importantly) silent! It was going to stream Netflix and Youtube with ease, stream video from my fileserver, play games, surf the web, and more!
When it arrived (which took no time at all - thank you Amazon!), I ripped open the shipping box and had it setup in no time. I got the wifi connected, and then went into the play store, and....oh. It wouldn't connect. Three or four tries later it finally connected, and after a couple of hours of painfully slow loading/retrying/loading/downloading I managed to get Netflix installed. Yay!
Only it wasn't "yay". Instead of the crisp video I was expecting, what I got was a splotchy mess of pixels and artifacts that barely resembled the source material. Combine that with 2 minutes of buffering for every minute of video, and... well, frankly I'd rather watch paint dehydrating.
I got similar results when trying to stream video from my fileserver, both using the stock video player and MXPlayer. Web browsing was again painfully slow. Everything seemed to point to the WiFi - and this should not have been an issue as the device was never more than 6 feet away from my router.
In fact, the only thing that seemed to work well was Youtube - which was actually fantastic. I have no idea how this happened given all my other experiences with this unit. The CPU/GPU are actually pretty decent for the money, but are badly let down by the useless WiFi connection.
Sadly, I'm returning this one.
