Considering Giacchino's previous work on the Speed Racer soundtrack, I half expected to hear the original Star Trek theme replayed throughout the score. Surprisingly, it only shows up in the last two tracks. And as a Star Trek fan, and as a fan of movie scores, that's no bad thing. The theme for the new movie is stirring, as well as Nero's theme. Giacchino obviously went the same route as the rest of the production and decided not to bog this down with rehashes of Courage's & Goldsmith's themes, which works. The new movie starts before the crew settles into those comfortable roles and supposedly they get to their roles by the end of the movie when the original theme from Star Trek by Alexander Courage kicks in, which Giacchino rendered beautifully.
My only complaint about this album is the length. 45 some odd minutes of music doesn't seem like enough for a 2 hour movie, especially when almost 10 of those are the end credits. Hopefully there will be an expanded CD at some point in the future, but at this point, it's rather sparse. Epic, but sparse.
