Feels cheaply made, but works. Incompatible with Radeon 5870!, January 5, 2011
This review is from: ATLONA AT-DP400 Dual Link DVI to Mini DisplayPort Converter (Electronics)
Picked this up to hook my PC up to my 27" iMac because the Radeon 5870 in my PC will not communicate with the iMac over DisplayPort. The dp-400 does work, but with the 5870 it refuses to go any higher than 720p. I tried to use Powerstrip to force the resolution, but had no success. I also booted in to Linux and added the proper resolution (2560x1440) to xorg.conf, but it still refused to go higher than 720p. I hooked it up to another machine which has a GeForce 210 and it worked right away at 2560x1440. It may be possible that this device will have issues working with other cards in the Radeon 5xxx line seeing as almost the whole 5xxx line refuses to work with Apple displays over DisplayPort like the 5870. The 5870 has been out long enough...this incompatibility should have been made known.
The build quality of the device is poor and the box that it comes in is full of typos. I almost thought I received a Chinese rip-off. The device itself is made of plastic and is held together with a few plastic clamps in the ventilation holes. The two halves of the casing move around a little and feels like it could fall apart quite easily. Although the device does work (as long as you don't have a 5870), it is definitely not the quality you would expect of a $150 converter.
The picture quality is perfect. There are no artifacts nor any lag from the converter and the fact that it handles audio as well is a plus (I did not notice this until I got it).
