As a child psychologist, I especially appreciated the development of Benny's character in this book. Autism is a scary word for many people and this book allows us to really see Benny, rather than focus on his diagnosis. Children with autism spectrum disorders are first and foremost children and seeing them for who they are is essential in helping them develop optimally. Manning does a great job of detailing the lives of Benny and Bess and hooking the reader into wanting to know them. Benny's story and his connection with Bess is a wonderful tale of two people who needed each other to find the core of who they are, but it is the expert weaving of the dogs into this duo that makes the story even more exquisite. For those unfamiliar with dog shows, it is a nice insider's view. I highly recommend this book. It has something for everyone!
