All American Apple Pie cook book... and more!,
This review is from: Silver Palate Cookbook 25th Anniversary Edition (Hardcover)
When I arrived in the USA as a college student, I was thrilled by the typical sights and sounds of this country - but alas, not the food. College dorm cusine did not help change my mind, either. When an American friend told me that authentic dishes cooked well from fresh ingredients taste good, I was politely skeptical.
Fast forward 20 years in the USA. I've sampled a few good "traditional American" dishes and modern twists on the tried and true favorites. I know that they exist somewhere but I also realize that with the prevalance of convenience and processed food they are hard to come by. Unfortunately, when one is used to convenience meals, one's palate adjusts accordingly and does not miss the more fibrous texture and natural flavors of unprocessed food.
The Silver Palate Cookbook is a compendium of such down home dishes and modern versions thereof - made from fresh, everyday ingredients. Here you find the staples - pies, dinner entrees, sandwiches etc. The recipes do not call for exotic ingredients or require that one master complex sleights of hand. Considering that this book has been in demand for a quarter of a century after its introduction - weathering culinary fads and trends - speaks volumes about it.
The "Silver Palate 25th Anniversary Edition" is more than a collection of recipes; it is a loving tribute to food. In addition to presenting useful cooking tips and techniques the authors delight us with tasty tidbits of food lore. The illustrations too showcase loving detail to the simple elegance of food ingredients. The book delights the eye, the mind and the soul while tempting the palate and our sense of creativity. Bon Apetit!
