FIRST I COULD NOT GET THE HDMI TO WORK. SWITCHED OUT CABLES BUT STILL NOTHING. FINALLY AFTER CONNECTING AND DISCONNECTING MAYBE A DOZEN TIMES THE SCREEN CONNECTED. NOW IT JUST GOES OUT FOR FUN, AS DURING WRITING THIS REVIEW. NOT SURE IF IT IS A FAULTY INSTALL OF THE HDMI COMPONENT OR FAULTY HARDWARE. I'LL GIVE IT A COUPLE DAYS AND SEE IT GETS BETTER. (IT IS NOT MY MONITOR/TV OR CABLES THAT ARE BAD, SINCE I'VE USED THE HDMI CONNECTIONS AND NEVER A PROBLEM TILL HOOKING UP THIS GATEWAY THING)
INTERNET SETUP WAS A PAIN, JUST NEVER WANTED TO ID WIFI, FINALLY SET UP DIRECT LINE AND THE COMPUTER AFTER MANY MORE ATTEMPTS FINALLY ACCEPTED WI-FI. THEN WHEN STARTING BACK UP IT AGAIN DID NOT WANT TO CONNECT. (MAYBE, IT HAD TO DOWNLOAD THE FIX, BEATS ME.) FINALLY IT SEEMS TO WORK AND HOPING THE HDMI WILL BECOME MORE RELIABLE WITH TIME.
THE GATEWAY WEBSITE STATED OFFICE STARTER WAS PART OF THIS MACHINE - NOPE THAT PROGRAM IS NOW GONE. SO FAR I CAN NOT SEE WHY PAST REVIEWS OF GATEWAY PRODUCTS GAVE GREAT REVIEWS. THE MACHINE WAS SENT WITHOUT ANY INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT WAS PART OF THE MACHINE, SO WHEN WI-FI ORIGINALLY FAILED I BEGAN TO THINK WI-FI WAS NOT INCLUDED ... SIMPLY FRUSTRATING.
I'LL UPDATE THIS REVIEW AFTER MORE TIME, BUT AS OF MY FIRST DAY WITH THIS SYSTEM, I CAN NOT GIVE MORE THAN A MAX OF TWO STARS.
Update after two days - The WI-FI card is performing fine, no further problems. HDMI port works for now, but any movement of the cord and it disconnects. Probably only a problem with my system and probably not a system fault overall. For those wondering about windows 8, not sure what the fuss is about, it accepted all my old programs (even on old Microsoft Bookshelf 1996)and easy to get used to. The games that came with Windows 7 are not to be found, they have apps instead leading to other sites. Most apps I have looked at still need a lot of work, but it looks like apps are here to stay. Overall, I must raise my star rating from 2 to 3, and if not for the Gateway/Acer interface, the systems basic hardware currently can not be beat for 379.99. Hoping the HDMI port does not force a 30 day return, but that is what makes AMAZON GREAT.
12/19/2012 Update. Kept the system since only real problems are "NO HELPFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE AT GATEWAY" and even with a new HDMI cable still having problems with connection. (It stays connected as long as there is no movement of the cord or unit) Overall, the older Intel processor is a champ, I highly recommend the Core i-3 2100. I added 4GB of Crucial CT51264BA1339 from Amazon and it really helps if you like to play games, since Intel's Graphics shares the memory with your processor.
