very good--as far as it goes, that is,
This review is from: Classic Dino: Best of Dean Martin (Audio CD)
While the music on this CD is nothing short of wonderful--this album is chock full of great hits by Dean Martin--it's just too brief a track set to be called "The Best of Dean Martin." Nevertheless, Dean's vocal prowess is beautifully showcased here; and that's grand. He never lets go of a single superfluous note and his voice is as smooth as silk--just like always! In addition, the overall quality of the sound itself is very good.
"That's Amore" starts the CD off with Dean singing flawlessly; the music that accompanies him fits in perfectly with his vocals. Excellent! "Ain't That a Kick in the Head" is yet another terrific number with Dean squarely front and center and "Memories Are Made of This" impresses me, too. Dean gets some vocal backup on "Memories Are Made of This" although he never really needed backup; his talent carried him through every time. "I'll Always Love You (Day After Day)" is a slightly less well known number but make no mistake about it--it all works very well and I love to hear Dino sing this tune.
"Sway" is most romantic even after all these years and Dean performs one of the very best renditions of "You Belong to Me" that I've heard--ever! "You Belong to Me" also makes great use of the strings and brass as Dean does this one up right! "Volare (Nel Blu Di Pinto Di Blu)" is a song Dean was very well known for performing; and other gems include "Powder Your Face with Sunshine (Smile! Smile! Smile!)" which I like even if the sound is slightly muffled; my very favorite (and sophisticated) song in Dean Martin's repertoire entitled "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You;" the evergreen standard "Return To Me (Ritorna-Me)" with its lush arrangement; the memorable "The Door Is Still Open (To My Heart)" that gets the royal treatment from Dean and those musicians and "Everybody Loves Somebody" which always brings a smile to my face--this is that sweet! The album then closes with Dean Martin outdoing even himself on "Houston" and the stunning ballad "I Will."
In addition, if you choose to download this album as a group of MP3 files for your CD player, you will get the digital booklet entitled "Classic Dino: The Best of Dean Martin."
Dean Martin was loved by millions all over the world for his talents not just as a vocalist but as an actor, television personality and more. Because almost all of these songs are on so many other Dean Martin CDs I would say that this album is more geared toward the casual fan or the newcomer just discovering the artistry of Dean Martin. In any case, enjoy!
