Compared with ThinkBamboo chasen,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Japanese Tea Ceremony Chasen Bamboo Whisk 120-tate (Kitchen)
I got this chasen (matcha whisk) from the JapanBargain seller. The chasen had fewer prongs than expected. I thought 120 meant the number of prongs around the outside, but apparently it includes both inside and outside prongs -- at least with the one they sent me. The chasen is still short on prongs though, with only 116 prongs instead of 120. I guess they figured 116 prongs was close enough, but I say it's poor quality control. Besides, there were little threads/shavings of bamboo stuck in it -- about as wide as a hair -- and I had to pick them out before using it.
The chasen I got from ThinkBamboo (sold through Amazon) had 80 prongs around the outside -- a total of 160 prongs if you include the inner prongs. I'd recommend getting that one instead. From what I've read, more prongs is supposed to mean it's easier to froth your matcha. Besides, I didn't have to remove hairlike bamboo shavings from the ThinkBamboo chasen, and it came with a scoop.
In case it matters to anyone, the handle of the chasen from ThinkBamboo is 1 1/16 inches in diameter and the total length of the chasen is about 4 3/8 inches long. The handle of the chasen from JapanBargain is 7/8 inches in diameter and the chasen is about 4 1/8 inches long, though it may grow a little longer as the prongs uncurl. The handles of both were about 1 5/8 inches long, with the ThinkBamboo chasen being not quite 1/32 inch longer -- not enough difference to matter.
The chasen from JapanBargains came in a container that was nasty sticky from having labels peeled off of it. I have to wonder what the labels said that they felt they had to remove them. Maybe they said "Be sure to pick out the bamboo threads before using."
Although the chasen works, it's not as good as one that has more prongs. If I had it to do again, I'd certainly get a different one.
Edit on May 22, 2012:
I'm increasing my original 2 star review to 3 stars. Although the chasen was not as described, it's held up for almost 5 months now with no sign of wear beyond the prongs unfurling. I also tend to use it more often than the Think Bamboo chasen because of the slimmer handle.

Oriental Touch LLC says:
I appreciate your extensive review. But you are reviewing a wrong product. We are not JapanBargain. We are Oriental Touch. We only sell Oriental Touch stuff. JapanBargain is a vendor who pretends to sell Oriental Touch stuff. All Oriental Touch products are exclusively sold by Oriental Touch LLC or fulfilled by Amazon through Oriental Touch LLC. ThinkBamboo is our loyal imitator. I doubt their products can match our quality. -Oriental Touch LLC

Thank you for your information. I'd like to try your superior chasen, but unfortunately Amazon isn't currently fulfilling it through Oriental Touch LLC. I guess the message is that there's no telling what make of chasen you'll get if you order this from an Amazon seller other than Oriental Touch LLC.
