An important book for our times,
This review is from: Saving Civility: 52 Ways to Tame Rude, Crude & Attitude for a Polite Planet (Paperback)
What I love about Sara Hacala's book is that it's not another pessimistic diatribe about the decay of manners and civil conduct in our society. Nor is it consumed with rules of etiquette that often seem irrelevant to the monumental issues we face. Yes, the book discusses the ever-growing breakdown in civility that is affecting our relationships, our businesses, and our communities (much of which can be attributed to anonymous, online communication), and the threat this lack of civility poses. But the author goes a step further and empowers the reader, offering ideas for improving the situation--often by improving oneself. After all, while we personally may not be that politician demonizing the opposition on TV, or the office or school bully, we contribute to the problem in smaller, subtler ways that we may not even realize. By cultivating optimism in ourselves, learning to be more patient, and even just smiling more, we can inject the world with much-needed positive interactions that affect and influence others. And, as the author instructs, by being more conscious of polarizing discourse from our sources of information and those around us, we can choose to ignore those who would turn us against each other and approach everyone with an open mind. Sara Hacala's book is filled with uplifting ideas and encouraging ways to counteract one of the biggest problems facing our society right now.
