Guidebook for a Lifetime,
This review is from: Autobiography of a Yogi (Reprint of the Philosophical library 1946 First Edition) (Paperback)
Five stars are a poor symbol to represent Yogananda's opus. This is a great book-comparable to any of the world's scriptures in its ability to transform the reader's consciousness. Imagine Christ, Buddha, or Krishna telling their life story in their own words. That's what you get when you read Autobiography of a Yogi. With humor, wisdom, and heart, Yogananda relates the extraordinary events of his life. But those events serve as a mere instrument for conveying sublime truths-truths expressed in such clear language that everyone can grasp them. I thank Crystal Clarity Publishers for making available the original version of this great work, and I give it my highest recommendation. If you are interested in spirituality, buy it now.

Jeffrey Quick says:
Shocking that this Kindle edition is Free! Can't help but want to learn why that is? There must a good reason, but what? Hoping someone can enlighten me on this Special Gift!

I am guessing - purely guessing - that this version is out of print because it was not published by the Self-Realization Fellowship, which owns the rights to all of Guruji's talks and writing.

It seems actual sales of the out of date 1946 incomplete edition
just was never selling that well for CC Publishers.
As that book was already free from many online sources!
Yet coming of kindle has changed this, the masses seem to like
lesser quality 1946 products - like they are also ravenous for lifeless processed fast foods.
Many persons feel that Yogananda's presence is
far more tangible in the orange covered newer editions
from Self-Realization Publishers.
The reason for this is that the orange cover edition is
the finished and most advanced product ordered by Yogananda.
He began changing this book right after His first editions and left
verbal and written instructions for many other changes which
Self-Realization Fellowship Publishers have faithfully carried out.
For those who have deeply Loyally worked with Yogananda,
those orange cover editions really carry all of his final wishes and wisdom,
and are the most advanced editions of his teachings.
His best work! Why settle for the outdated 1946 outdated editions.
If Yogananda wanted you to read his redundant works, why did he begin
the process of changing it. Do you know better than the Guru?

To lions152, this book remains in print, though we were out of stock for a bit while reprinting the book, due to selling out. Master left the copyright to Autobiography of a Yogi in the public domain, a fact which came to light in the course of legal proceedings in recent years.

In reply to PYisLOVE, (Fred - right?) ... you are mistaken. In fact, the First Edition Reprint of the AY is our best selling book. As I am currently serving as president of Crystal Clarity Publishers, I know what our sales are for this book.
The AY is free online, from many sources, due to the reality that the Master left the copyright for his book in the public domain - which only came to light after a lawsuit initiated by SRF itself. You can read all about that event in an upcoming book to be published by Crystal Clarity this fall: A Fight For Religious Freedom, by Jon Parsons.
I'm happy for people to feel the Master's presence, no matter the source. The idea that Yogananda can only be perceived or his presence felt in the publications of one organization or another simply cannot be true.
Listen friend, when we first published the First Edition reprint of the AY in the early '90s, the majority of orders for the book were SRF members! I know, as I took the daily calls ordering the book for many, many months. If you yourself would take the time to read the first edition, you might think twice before labeling it "old materials."
I agree with your lovely affirmation, that PY is love. But I cannot agree with the notion that Yogananda is limited nor defined exclusively, by the narrow sectarianism proclaimed by some of his followers.

Fact Check says:
Time for a fact check, for sure:
Kriyananda of Ananda, The Yogananda Institute, Nayaswami Order, Crystal Clarity Publishers, Ananda Sangha Publications, The Expanding Light, Ananda-Sangha Worldwide, Yogananda Community, Ananda Clarity Magazine, Ananda Village, Inner Path.......was kicked out of SRF after spending only a few years with Yogananda.
Kriyananda stole all of Yogananda's writings, photos, videos, etc. upon leaving.
To Skip Barrett: Ananda should stop putting their whitewashing spin on the truth in order to sell more books! J. Donald Walters, you, and the rest of his fanatical followers have done a most incredible job of absolutely flooding the internet with their version of the man 'Swami Kriyananda'. However if one is diligent enough and desirous of the truth, one can sift through the weeds for the blossoms of truth - some are actual official documents from a court of law:
The REAL truth about the SRF lawsuit:
"All eight jurors found that Ananda and its founder, J. Donald Walters, infringed on the copyrights of the Los Angeles-based Self-Realization Fellowship by reprinting articles and selling recordings of the fellowship's long-since-dead guru."
Kriyananda's fondness for young girls:
"Since the '60s, the Ananda Church of Self-Realization has grown from a Northern California commune into a worldwide New Age empire. Its leader has grown fond of s*x with young believers."
Original Ananda logo taken from 'massage' parlor: anandauncovered(dot)com/LogoENG.htm
Trouble with Italian police:
After finding those kernels of truth about Kriyananda, contrary to the lies and embellishments told, his s*xcapades, problems with the law, one can't argue why Yogananda gave an expressed directive to have all of his writings published by the organization he founded: Self-Realization Fellowship. I certainly wouldn't want someone like Kriyananda representing my body of work or speaking on my behalf!
As far as "no matter the source":
I would much rather listen to/read the inspirations of Daya Mata who spent 80 years in Paramahansa Yogananda's Self-Realization Fellowship or from someone like Brother Anandamoy who spent 63 years there or Brother Bhaktananda who spent 73 years or any other of the LONG STANDING and LOYAL SRF monastics (whose reputations are beyond reproach - more than I can say for Kriyananda!):
How many years did Kriyananda spend with Yogananda? Two? Maybe three at the most?
Self-Realization Fellowship is the official publisher! Identifiable by an SRF/YSS emblem of a lotus flower with a star in a circle.
I wouldn't give a penny to that creepy Kriyananda or the time of day!

"In fact, the First Edition Reprint of the AY is our best selling book." you said.
Since most of what you sell is written by Donald J Walters [Kriyananda],
it is easy to understand why Yogananda's incomplete out of date 1946 Autobiography of a Yogi
would be your best seller. So that is not saying much!
The orange cover edition, which is not yet on kindle is the
only complete edition which clearly represents the final instructions
for this book by Yogananda Himself. The SRF editions represent the most
accurate and final vision Yogananda spoke of for his great legacy of SRF/YSS.
Yogananda, with so many responsibilities, did miss a few things.
However he made it crystal clear both verbally and in affidavits that
He wanted all of his works and recordings published only by
Self-Realization Fellowship. Those who care little about His wishes
and his mission will always be contradicting His wishes.
To see more about what Paramahansa Yogananda wanted for
his work visit Kriyayogatoday.blogspot.com
In a letter to Rajarsi Janakananda from Yogananda,
September 19, 1935;
" To be known by God is everything.
Like Buddha who gave up everything,
live only for God, Self-Realization Fellowship, and Guru's work,
and you will attain everlastingness in heaven."
Further to my above comments;
Self-Realization fellowship still remains as ever a non-sectarian spiritual society
just as the Guru established it. It's members can be proud of the way it is being
operated by those who are still loyal to Yogananda and His vision/legacy.
SRF Devotees need no go anywhere else once they start the lessons course,
everything is there to take you all the way to divine consciousness with
Whatever problems it has as an organization are small compared to the sad
example of some others.
Leadership is everything! Try reading the Real orange cover edition of
the "Autobiography of a Yogi" and you'll feel the difference!

Unchanged unaltered editions do not benefit many , since Paramahansa Yogananda
began changing this old outdated version of His SRF book soon after
its first publication.
If one wishes to read the real Yogananda, the complete editions are available
only with orange covers from Self-Realization Fellowship publishers via amazon books.
The 1946 edition is like a psychological antique, quaint but not accurate or as functional
as the final product ordered up by Yogananda.
It only seems wonderful until one reads the real thing in the orange cover from SRF !

I agree with you -- people should read both the 1st edition reprint, written by the Master himself, and also compare it to the later editions, with their thousands of editorial changes, including the change after his passing to say Kriya is only avaliable from SRF.
For one to receive initiation into Kriya, the Master wrote in his book, in Chapter 26: "Because of certain ancient yogic injunctions, I cannot give a full explanation of Kriya Yoga in the pages of a book intended for the general public. The actual technique must be learned from a Kriyaban or Kriya Yogi; here a broad reference must suffice.
In later editions, published after his passing, this was changed to say one must receive Kriya Yoga from an "an authorized Kriyaban (Kriya Yogi) of Self-Realization Fellowship (Yogoda Satsanga Society of India)."
From your point of view, the Master didn't know what he was saying or writing while alive and needed to leave corrections to this important passage in his biography, to be made after his passing. Thankfully, Kriya isn't owned by anyone.
The fact is, everyone is free to read both the original 1st edition, as well as later editions, "feel the difference" as you say, and then follow where their heart leads them.
Blessings to you on the Path.
