best book i've read to my children by far,
This review is from: The Underneath (Paperback)
i read a lot. and i also read a lot of books to my 2 daughters, who are now 9 and 11. last summer i read them the underneath and i was blown away. such a cliche, but i really was. i would definitely read this book aloud because much of it sounds like poetry, and i mean that in a good way. it is dark and light and sad and wonderfully joyous, just like life. i won't spoil the ending but i will say that it took my breath away, and you WILL like it's ultimate message. if you are only presenting life as a pretty, happy, shiny experience to your kid, don't read them this book. but if you, like me, talk to them about the yin yang of things--that life is both happy and sad and THAT is what makes it great--you'll love this story. the fact that it is set in the piney woods of texas was a bonus for us, since we live in texas but haven't as yet experienced that part of the state. i think that this is a story for older kids, say, 9 or 10 and up. My then 11 year old LOVED it as much as i did and immediately reread it herself. my 8 year old liked it but thought there were a few too many characters--perhaps she was too young. i wouldn't lose a single character, though, as they are all so well-written and vivid. i wouldn't change a word about this fantastic read.
thanks to the author for breaking out of the mold and writing a seriously original and devastatingly great piece of literature!
