5.0 out of 5 stars Appears to be upgradable., July 8, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HP 14-inch Laptop, AMD E2-7110, 4GB RAM, 32GB eMMC, Windows 10 (14-an013nr, Silver) (Personal Computers)
Haven't used it yet. First thing I did was check to see if ram is expandable and hdd upgradable. Looks like yes to both as neither are soldered to board. I'm not sure where you get that kind of hdd though. It has an extra slot for a 2nd sick of ram too. Looks like you could add an optical drive if you are willing to modify the case by cutting into the plastic.

*edit below*
I have added a labeled picture of the board and also a picture of the SATA connection
I could not find a suitable replacement hard drive for this, if you know where I should look let me know, thanks!

If you click on the image, then right-click on the slightly larger image and select "view in new tab" you can see the full size high-resolution picture that Mr. Smiley kindly took. Definitely 2 DIMM slots, and what looks suspiciously like a SATA connector in the middle of the picture. I'm guessing that the PCB with M2.0 * 3.0 is the eMMC. It would be awesome if you could try plugging a SSD or HD into that SATA connector to see if it is "live". Is there room with the metal plate there?

Curious if yours has the same backlight bleed issue that others mentioned.

Sadly, I cannot find a hdd that could replace the one it comes with.
I do have a slim DVD-RW drive that I am planning on hooking into the SATA connector to see if it works. I don't think a SATA hdd will work there as the connections are slightly different on the hdd compared to the optical drives, if the connections were the same then the metal plate that the eMMC hdd is mounted to would need to be removed to fit a hdd there.

Also, the display looks fine to me. I have not really played with the computer yet though, mostly just had fun taking it apart, so I can't really comment on the real performance of the machine. I do plan on upgrading the ram to 16 gb to see if it will take it (according to the bios the OS is win10 home 64bit)

It's hard to tell from the pic but it could be mSATA or m2 SATA connection. If it can be unplugged from the main board, it can be upgraded. To migrate the OS, you will need an external mSATA connector and a cloning software or make a bootable USB flash drive prior to swapping out the SSD. mSATA SSDs are more expensive, almost twice as expensive as a typical 2.5 in/7.5mm SSDs.

However, I am surprised this laptop motherboard offers 2 DIMM slots.
You only have to buy one 4G RAM or even max out at 16Gs. After the upgrade, this unit may not be a bargain that it appears to be.

4G RAM - $20, 8G RAM - $30, 16G RAM - $50 ...
500G mSATA SSD - $180 - 250

It looks like m.2 to me. I had a 128g in my Lenovo and put a 512g samsung into it. Unfortunately it died and is the main drive in my MSI now along with a traditional 1tb ssd. The m.2 drives come in different lengths, and I'm guessing that is what the screw holes are for in the aluminium.

*Update* : It seems Microsoft got wise about the disk space requirements. The anniversary update from them offered to continue the upgrade if I inserted a XXgb flash drive to make the upgrade successful which it did.

If one is going to stick with the Win10 OS then that hdd has to be upgraded somehow. The latest update of Win10 requires 20Gb free to install which is nowhere near what is available unfortunately, even with cleaning off half the HP-ware and using M$ disk cleanup utility. Maybe the next step is using that other SATA connector and with the adapter sineo suggested? Thanks for sharing these photos!

The one thing I like about HP laptops is that they always provide the service manual:

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05227925

the eMMC is a M.2

To add HDD, you'll need the bracket and cable
Hard drive bracket: 859126-001
Hard drive connector: 815139-001

I recently upgraded this laptop with 8 Gb of RAM, replacing the RAM pictured. Unfortunately, I was aiming for 16 Gb of RAM with two Crucial 8 Gb sticks, yet utilizing the second slot seemed to cause the computer not to want to start. Oh well... 8 certainly is better than 4. Maybe someone smarter can figure out why the second RAM slot does not work and we can bump the RAM on this guy to 16 Gb? The RAM I used can be found through the Amazon ID number (ASIN): B007B5S52C, though at this point unless you want to upgrade two laptops I suggest you get the single 8 Gb stick instead.

Crucial also has a website that supposedly has a compatible SDD for this computer. I'll do a bit more research and see if it is worth a shot. I'm sure the greatest issue will be navigating the Windows 10 transfer. If I decide to do it I'll post my adventures here.

AMD E2 CPU only has single channel memory controller, 8G is the max that it can handle.
