Beyond all Price Review,
This review is from: Beyond All Price (Paperback)
Wonderfully readable historical fiction of a Union Civil War nurse, Nellie M. Chase, who escaped a dismal pre-war existence in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to join and become the matron nurse of the religious 100th Pennsylvania Voluntary Infantry, the Roundhead Regiment. Though mistrusted by the regimental reverend because of her less than godly background, her pre-war street smarts give her a tenacity that she will need throughout the remaining war and years followng the war. She becomes well known and a favorite among the soldiers that she cares for and gives her a last full measure of devotion to a cause that her training as a nurse prepares her for.
The author Carolyn Poling Schriber has written a colorful novel of this heroine who deserves to be remembered. Well researched, the descriptions of the places visited and the dialogue between the characters encountered bring the reader into the story to experience the trials and tributes of her life and those around her with a backdrop of south, east and west Civil War campaigns leading into post war 19th century. Highly recommended!!!
