Customer Review

on April 20, 2012
Picked this up knowing it had been nominated for the Orange Prize and having heard good things about the author's THE GATHERING. But I was quite disappointed. The plot--was there one? The story was boring; it went nowhere. The main characters were poorly developed, and were so unlikeable that reading about them for 250-plus pages was punishment. Still, I soldiered on, thinking there might be something redeeming at book's end, some twist of plot, some shocker that made reviewers praise it. It seems likely that the publication of this book was due to a publisher determined to ride on the coattails of the author's earlier successes; it would have been better if the editor sent it back for some major revision.
