4.0 out of 5 stars Overall, a great value, July 25, 2008
This review is from: The Sopranos: The Complete Series Gift Set (DVD)
HBO tends to rip off customers with DVDs but for 86 episodes (even though only about 60-65 are actually worth watching), paying $280 isn't bad. I feel about this set the way I feel about the Godfather Trilogy being rereleased: I love the first 2/3 and I like the newer DVD extras so I guess I can deal with that abomination known as GF 3 (in the Sopranos case, Season 6 and 6.2 and isolated throwaway episodes in other seasons). The Sopranos also demonstrates that any good TV drama should wrap it up in about five seasons. I truly think that had the writers tightened up Season 4 more, the series could've ended in five seasons as being the greatest show of all-time. But because of Season 6 and 6.2 (which had isolated genius but nothing to the level of the first five), my opinion of the show is jaded.

However, if you don't have any of the seasons (or even if you do) I still recommend you buy it for the Blu-Ray quality and the new Sopranos extras.

The Shield is in its 7th and final season. By far the best television show in history because of consistency. They never jumped the shark and wrap it all up. The Sopranos has more loose ends than the series finale.

Your criticism of Season 6, Part I might be justified, but Season 6, Part II was amazing. They finished with a stunningly great run of episodes which rivaled any run of the series.

Also, the other commenter calling The Shield the best show ever needs to have his head examined. Watch The Wire, dude. I used to like The Shield too until I realized how overwrought and false it is after seeing The Wire.

Damon Enola says:
The Shield and The Wire are both fantastic shows. I was lucky to buy the entire Wire series on Amazon for $80 and over the years I collected Shield seasons which are fantastic (the final season of the Shield is spectacular). It was sad that two of the greatest cop shows of all time ended in the same year.

Re: Sopranos Season 6, Part 2, explain what was actually amazing, the runaway tangential plotlines, the contrived, last second mafia war, or the stupid idea of Melfi rejecting Tony thus making her entire character over the series quite worthless? The best episode of 6.2 was "Kennedy and Heidi", loved it, the rest were terrible and not worth mentioning alongside the great Soprano seasons: 1, 2, 3, and 5 (4 was half decent too).
