Edit4/9/09-I'm done with this game and it's crashes because I love this series so much I gave it a chance but it's just no fun anymore. I'm uninstalling it and Steam. I may reinstall in a few months but i'm as frustrated as can be with this game and Steam. Such a big letdown but it does make a nice coaster the box fits up 2 16 oz glasses. You can't return it so find a use for it.

I a have been a dedicated and excited fan of this series since the first Medieval. I have owned this game for over a week and have played it a fair amount and it has been one of the most frustrating experiences in recent memory. First off there the installation which is about the time most people who have never read the reviews will be introduced to "steam". A few minutes after that you'll find out that your purchase amounts to a glorified rental from steam. Assuming you agree and if you purchased the game you're a fan and most likely will, steam will allow you to play "your" game. If not annoyed by now then by all means play the game then you can be thoroughly infuriated by the gameplay. The land battles are not bad to look at the animations are pretty cool, the control leaves a lot to be desired especially unit movement the pathfinding is downright horrible you'll spend minutes trying to get your troops to move where you want, only to watch them go by the worst possible route or stop short of their objective for no reason. The most frustrating thing about this game are the naval battles the ai is horrendous battles quickly break down into a micromanagement party with you at the controls. The enemy ai works fine it's you ships that are totally stupid, they spend their time chasing the enemy and never really quite being able to bring their guns to bear while the enemy ships cruise around them and pelt them like swans circling barrels. Visually awesome i think the control scheme is horrible the ai needs more brains and the bugs oh the bugs. anyways maybe there will be a patch soon. I really hate steam and drm they should tell up front you are renting a game license not print internet connection required for activation in small print on the back. I love this series but I have been turned very off this series by this experience, if the game had delivered the goods I could possibly look past the drm issue but I feel like i got ripped off and i would not recomend this game to anyone.
