This author has perfect timing because it seems like every time I've been in a reading slump, a book in this series would come out, and it would always be just what I needed to capture and keep my attention. This was another great book in a great series, and it wrapped up everything that had been building up throughout all nine books nicely.
Emerson was believable and likeable. Dash was a sweetheart. The romance blossoming between them was cute (though it was only a very tiny part of the story). The plot flowed well. And much like the other books, this one had some emotional scenes (my favorite was the scene between Emerson and Chase), some action-packed scenes, some touching scenes, and a strong sense of family threaded throughout.
To be honest, this wasn't my favorite in the series, but I didn't have any major issues. I just felt like this one was a little less intense overall, like a couple things happened a little too easily, and like I never quite connected to Emerson and Dash as much as I connected to Violet, Ryn, Calla, and Chase. But those are mostly personal preferences, and this was still just as well-written as the rest of the books.
Another thing I liked was that Calla had a big part in this book. I like the person she's become, how she's grown since her own story, and I liked the relationship between her and Emerson. It can be weird sometimes when a character you got to know in previous books as a protagonist is now a side character, but Rachel Morgan did that really well---with all her characters who were previously POV/main characters. And it was great how they all still stayed in the story, so we did get to see them grow more, even though the focus wasn't on them.
Another thing I especially liked about the series as a whole was how the author took risks, the kinds of things you don't see often, at least not in YA books, like an age-gap romance (in Calla's story) and characters who did bad things but grew and still ended up being likeable in the end. But these risks worked! Or at least they did for me. There were also lots of twists---another thing that can go very wrong---but those worked too!
So overall, this was a gripping series with some great characters, a bit of humor, a lot of magic, some touching moments and relationships, an interesting over-arching plot, and kick-butt faeries!
