3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing "Advanced" about this book; Chapter titles are moronic, January 11, 2010
This review is from: Real-World Flash Game Development: How to Follow Best Practices AND Keep Your Sanity (Paperback)
I don't normally write reviews for my Amazon purchases. I'm usually content to read the user reviews, buy the book, and move on. But "Real-World Flash Game Development" has annoyed me so much that I feel the need to vent a bit of this nerd rage and hopefully provide some balance to the 5-star reviews posted so far.

Overall, the book is okay. I don't want to be too harsh on it but there are two issues that have really made me regret the purchase:

First, it covers a nice range of topics but certainly not at the "Intermediate to Advanced" level mentioned on the back cover. You probably won't get much out of it if you already have experience working with AS3. Rather, it seems to be geared more towards those who have used Flash as an animation tool and haven't done much programming. (I've been using AS3 for just over a year, with very little AS2 experience before that.)

The second issue -- and this is the one that sounds petty but has frustrated me so much -- is the ridiculous chapter titles. Programming books are usually used for reference, and it's much harder to find something when the chapters have nonsensical titles such as "Don't Hit Me!" or "//FTW!" or "We've All Been There". They're so inconsistent and stupid, both the author and the editor deserve a slap upside the head. Here's the complete list:

1) Computer Science Isn't for Everyone
2) The Best Tool for the Job
3) A Plan is Worth a Thousand Aspirin
4) //FTW!
5) Managing Your Assets/Working With Graphics
6) Make It Move: ActionScript Animation
7) Turn It Up to 11: Working With Audio
8) Put the Video Back in "Video Game"
9) XML and Dynamic Content
10) Four Letter Words: M-A-T-H
11) Don't Hit Me!
12) I Always Wanted to Be An Architect
13) We've All Been There
14) MixUp -- A Simple Engine
15) Bringing It All Together: A Platformer
16) Don't Play By Yourself: Multiplayer Development
17) Squash 'Em If You've Got 'Em: The Bug Hunt
18) On Your Guard
