Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: DCS: Black Shark - PC (DVD-ROM)
I am going to be very brief here and say Blackshark is an awesome simulator.
It teaches you how to operate the subsystems of the helicopter. There are videos that explain its various subsystems. There is one that shows you the steps to take in starting the helicopter up from a cold and dark configuration.
The model is also highly detailed.
You will have fun with it flying missions and blowing things up.
There is one thing you should be aware of (and this is what I didn't like). This software must be activated before you fly.
I activated my copy through the Internet. After activation the software notified me that I have SEVEN activations left! I shouldn't have to explain the consequences of what that means.
Software activation is a means to control obsolescence. All the company has to do is shut down the activation server sometime in the future and you can't fly any more.
There are other methods for protecting software from being copied that does not impede on consumer rights. Possession is nine tenths of the law.
Control is closely linked to TYRANNY.

Thanks for the heads-up. The other bone-headed reviews raved about the game but failed to mention the limited activations. They must enjoy "renting" games!

Roger S. Bullock,
Thanks for the DRM warning. If you think that the DRM was not properly disclosed to you prior to buying and installing the game, please notify the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) via their website; it is a simple process. The FTC held a DRM hearing back in March and all parties involved - including DRM advocates - agreed on proper diclosure of DRM to Customers. Thus, the FTC is currently on the lookout for shady business practice involving inadequate disclosure of DRM.

I appreciate you letting us know about the activation DRM scheme. That alone is why I refuse to buy this. Too bad. It looked like a good game otherwise! Thanks again

ED is a Russia-based company that is headed by a former CIA guy. What exactly did you expect? To be fair to him and his outright paranoia and need to control you, they do claim to give you more activation keys whenever you ask for it... assuming the company stays in business forever or never stops supporting it.
That said, DCS BS missions are BORING. There is a monotony and stale character to the sim.

Im new to all this. does activation mean you only get to play it 7 times, or that you can only install it 7 times?

John S. Glassmyer says:
It means you can only install it 7 times at first. After you use up those 7 installs, you're given one more install each 30 days. Or I believe you can email them if you run out and they'll give you more installs (for free).
It's a great flight simulator.

Thank you for the warning. As a result, I will not purchase.
