A vendor close to the temple gates sold sparrows from a cage. While Mai enjoyed feeding them, she longed to have enough money to purchase the sparrows and set them free. One day a good deed that she performed initiated more good deeds and exchanges that made each person better off. Would this chain of events makes its way back to those sparrows?
Economic concepts are subtly integrated into the story, with scenes involving a marketplace and different kinds of vendors. With its rural Vietnamese setting, this book provides a nice opportunity to introduce children to ways of life in another country.
