Honestly, it's just sort of meh....

This review is from: Defiance (Defiance Trilogy) (Hardcover)
I was excited when I read all of the good reviews this book has received so far. I have read quite a few YA dystopian novels and dove into this one expecting to be sucked in. What ended up happening was I was unfortunately stuck reading something I rolled my eyes at about every 5 minutes or so.
I'm not about book bashing but I believe reviews should be honest. Firstly, this book reads like fan fiction, not something written by a mature author. The writing style is choppy and the characters are a two-dimensional carbon copy of every other semi-poorly written, YA, novel out there. They are over emotional and over dramatic to the point of annoyance and lack any depth at all. Logan, the male love interest/second main character constantly cycles from thinking about the death of his mother to pining for the main character, to thinking about the death of his mother, to pining for the main character and so on and so forth. Also, I love romance, but the way the author suffocates the reader with it is unnecessary and I believe put in place to cover the lack of substantial plot and character development. Too few questions are answered in a ploy to continue to keep reading the sequels. Not out of genuine interest, I think, but out of the sake of time already invested.
This isn't a smart read like say Divergent or any of the Kristen Cashore books. It's unfortunately just sort of a piece of literary fluff without any real soul. I'd look elsewhere.
