I am so sorry that you felt like you dropped $15 on this book. When you say that the average person couldn't stay on this for a week, I need to tell you that my husband and I have been on low carb for ten years now. The foods that Dr. Hyman has in his book are nothing more than suggestions for foods to eat. Many people look for someone to tell them what to eat. I am sure that's why he put menu's into his book.
In 2003 my husband had diabetes for over 20 years. He was suffering from severe painful neuropathy in both his feet so painful that he could not walk over 75 feet at a time without resting. He was on 43 units of insulin, weighed 280 pounds, he had sleep apnea and profuse night sweats from hypoglycemia. He was always tired, irritable and angry. For over 15 years, I had not had the company of the wonderful man I married in 1960. I had lost him as my friend and spouse. I still loved him but I didn't like him very much.
After much research and study, reading great books like Dr. Bernstein's "Diabetes Solution", in 2003 I developed a program for my husband and I that is similar to Dr. Hymans. Within 3 months he was completely off of insulin and has never gone back. Within 9 months he lost 80 pounds and has since lost another 20 pounds for a total weight loss of 100 pounds. Within 1 year he walked in 2 5K races and finished. Painful neuropathy in his feet has been gone for 9 years. Pain medication is eliminated. Blood pressure medication has been eliminated. He is at the gym 3 times a week and each time walks 2 miles and then goes swimming.
My entire reason for telling you all of this is to encourage you to give Dr. Hyman's methods a try. Even if you don't embrace the entire program. Learn about low carb. Plan your menus and meals. We eat bacon and eggs every morning and we have for the last ten years but I would not tell you that you should eat that. Eat what YOU like as long as you count your carbs, take your blood sugars and exercise. It works, G.E. it truly works. Good luck to you and May your God bless you.
