PLAYING WITH FIRE: AN ANTHOLOGY OF HORROR, by Coral Russell, is, admittedly not usually my style. I'm not a big horror fan--don't read King and don't go to horror films. In essence, I am a chicken. If I can read it (or see it), then I can imagine it, which means I can and will develop some kind of recurring nightmares. I say this as a precursor to explaining why I had to put this book down every now and then in the name of sleep. In Russell's case, this aversion has NOTHING to do with the obvious talent that the writer demonstrates. I'm hard pressed to say that that these stories are "good", but I'm the same person who says the same thing about Poe--yet I read him because he IS good. I finished PLAYING WITH FIRE for the same reason. It IS good. If a non-horror reader can admit that this anthology is good and worth reading--imagine what a horror fan will say! That leaves me with one last word--BRAVA!
