The drive installed just fine for me. After installation and formatting, the drive shows 931 GB free space. My PC is running Windows XP Home SP3. I am using this drive as an extra data drive; I did not install the operating system on it.
This is an advanced format drive. To learn what this means, use google and search for "western digital advanced format".
I purchased this drive based on my past experience with Western Digital, and based on the good reviews that this particular drive has. The 5 year warranty was also important to me.
The drive is quiet. I have no problems with it, but it is still new. I'll update this review as needed, if I experience problems.
=========================================== Here is what I did to install the drive on my PC using Windows XP: ===========================================
Plug in SATA data and power cables. Start PC as System Admin. Go to Admin Tools. Run Computer Management. Click on Disk Management.
It may show as: Disk 0 Unknown Not Initialized
Right click where it says "not initialized". Select Initialize Disk.
Disk shows "unallocated". Right click on "unallocated". Select New Partition. Select Primary partition. "Partition size in MB" should be the same as "maximum disk space in megabytes".
Select a drive letter to assign to the drive. This can be changed later.
Format this partition with the following settings: File system: NTFS Allocation unit size: Default Volume label: Western HDD (can change it later by right clicking drive in Windows Explorer)
Do NOT select quick format or compression.
Wait for the drive to finish formatting. See the status indicator. After a few minutes, it will show % complete.
