Ok, the fanboy in me was going to pick this up regardless of how good it was because it said Van Halen on the cover. The fanboy in me was going to buy it because we got Diamond Dave on vocals. The fanboy in me was gonna like it regardless. Fair enough. Truth is, this album by any other band would be their break-out album. This would turn any "average, slightly famous" band into superstars. It wouldn't matter who the singer is. But, let's face it, we hold our Van Halen to different standards, and not only break out the microscope, but the telescope to scrutinize them. Well, they heard we missed them...THEY'RE BACK!!!!! While not the best album from the Roth era, it is a great Halen album, with everything you expect from the first six albums. It sort of reminds me of some of Dave's early solo stuff with Eddie on guitars. That isn't a bad thing. I love Dave's solo ventures, but it was never quite the same without Ed. I think this album, or something very similar, would have been their follow-up to 1984. But, yeah, great album. The songs scream old Van Halen. Like VH II to Fair Warning Van Halen. Buy this; listen to this; love this. It's been played once a day every day since I bought it the day after it was released.
