2.0 out of 5 stars The speech "regonition" is horrible!, March 4, 2011
This review is from: Learn German: Rosetta Stone German - Level 1-5 Set (CD-ROM)
I've been working with the Russian 1-3 package ran into what seemed to be a pronunciation brick wall - I couldn't even get the software to recognize the very simple words in level 1, lesson 1. So why am I posting a review of the German levels 1-5 package? My experience with the Russian package was so frustrating that I begged a friend to let me test recognition on his German software.

I started learning German 10 years ago and while I'm not fluent, I aced my university courses in it, listen to German internet radio, and have participated in a weekly conversational German club for 4 years. Native speakers and university level German students have no trouble understanding me, but this software doesn't register a single word I say.

Do yourself a favor and disable the speech "recognition" feature - it will save you from throwing a perfectly good computer out your window.

Hi James, Pete and E. C.,

Here are some tips on how to best use the Speech Recognition software.

Use the USB-headset that came with your copy of Rosetta Stone Version 3.

Make sure your headset's microphone is positioned beside your mouth and approximately 1 inch away from your cheek

During speaking exercises, wait 2 seconds after the beep to begin speaking

Make sure your USB-headset is your default sound input/output device

As E. C. suggested, you can also lower your Speech Precision Level:
Click the Preferences icon (the circle with 3 horizontal lines).
Click Set Preferences from the drop-down menu.
Click the Audio Settings tab.
Use the slider to lower your Speech Precision Level.
Click Apply Changes.

I hope this information helps!

Hans says:
I've had similar experience with faulty speech recognition. I can repeat the same word the same way into the microphone 10x and it finally be accepted on the 11th time...after I've lost credit for the question. It is frustrating to say the least, but I don't want to disable the speech recognition and lose that valuable part of the learning process.

Rosetta Stone needs to fix it. It is simply too expensive to not work properly. A stopgap measure is to turn down the precision level in options to one level below normal. It now seems to be working better at accepting my spoken words.

I've had this experience once or twice before with my Russian as well until I figured out how to set the precision level! Try that!

I have had the same problem with the Dutch version of this. The speech recognition is horrible. My Belgian husband's Dutch was not even recognized by this program (We lived right near the border of the Netherlands). I could, however, make odd noises or growl and would get a perfect score on the speech recognition. Odd huh?
