This review is from: Panasonic H-X025 Lumix G Micro 4/3 LEICA DG SUMMILUX 25mm f/1.4 Leica Aspherical Lens (Electronics)
I purchased the 25mm Panasonic/Leica Summilux to go along with the Olympus OM-D E-M5 which I had just ordered. The combination is fantastic, giving me exceptionally sharp images in virtually any lighting situations (and I d a lot of night street shooting). The super fast f1.4 aperture also lets me utilize a nice short depth of field with a pleasant bokeh effect. The auto-focus speed on that camera is lightening qiuick AND because the lens is a bit beefier in size than many micro 4/3 lenses, grabbing the manual focus ring and quickly getting your shot is almost as fast. A joy to use.
This is my second Panasonic/Leica 25mm f1.4 Summilux lens, the other (D version) for my "standard" 4/3 Olympus e-30. I say this because the differences are a bit telling. The smaller micro 4/3 DG lens is A LOT smaller, about 1/3 the weight, and is wonderfully balanced on the OM-D. Unfortunately part of making the lens smaller and lighter included using more plastic in the lens housing on the DG variant. The lens doesn't feel "cheap," by any stretch of the word, but just not as "Leica-like" as its bigger brother.
I've heard that some people have experienced a bit of chatter coming from the lens. My understanding is the slight noise comes from the fast shifting of the aperture on some non-Panasonic cameras. I've never heard that on my camera, but I virtually always shoot in an aperture priority mode.
In some ways this is the perfect lens for the Olympus OM-D. Not only does it look and feel good on that body, but shooting with a standard focal length prime lens completes the 1970's experience begun with the OM-D's styling. The lens brings me back into the process of photography which I first learned with film SLRs--not a bad thing!
This has become the lens which I keep on my camera unless I have a real need to switch to something else, and that's not very often. It was hard for me to spend the money for this lens--especially when I had the larger D version and adapter ring ready and waiting--but the superb compliment it is to the OM-D is something to experience.
