Weiss has exposed the infiltration of our country by Randians-- I knew some of it, but I didn't realize how far gone we'd gotten. This is essential info for those of us who are trying to influence policy or even trying to act as responsible citizens and voters. We need to know what these folks are up to and how they frame their arguments-- and we need to know that their underlying purpose would gut the principles our nation was founded on.
Rand's thesis was anything but objective or rational. For instance, she seems to have missed the repeated proof in history that large groups of people who are unable to obtain basic resources have a strong tendency to revolt. There is just no way to live in a self-interest vaccuum, no matter how attractive the notion might sound. It will come back and bite you. True self-interest always takes the broader interests of others into account.
Reading this book, I see that Rand has become a sort of cultural malware, infecting even the most unlikely organizations and philosophies. If we are to have a hope of salvaging our political system, we must all learn to identify this nasty program and get busy deprogramming.
