2.0 out of 5 stars ECMALST1 Stereo Mic picks up AF & Motor Noise, November 24, 2010
By
This review is from: Sony ECMALST1 Alpha Compact Stereo Microphone - Black (Electronics)
I've been evaluating the Sony ECMALST1 Alpha Compact Stereo Microphone (~$149-Nov 2010) against similar, though a bit more expensive stereo mics (on a Sony SLT A55). What I've found is that the ECMALST1 performs quite well during filming... except for inadequate insulation between the shoe-mounted mic and the camera body that results in camera/AF noise pick-up during filming in quiet environs.

Inadequate insulation allows the camera and shoe to channel motor and AF noise to the soundtrack (when using the Sony DT 19-250mm zoom lens (SAL18250)). Certainly, if a high-end multi-thousand dollar lens were chosen, the results might change, but similarly, when an insulated mic such as the Rode Stereo Video Mic (~$240-Nov 2010) is used, the results change! Note that if you want the Rode mic camera mounted (and other similar non-Sony mics), the Rode mic would have to ride on a Sony Hot Shoe Adapter (FA-HS1AM) (~$95-Nov 2010) inserted in the camera's hot shoe. Voila, the noise disappears!

The difference is simply insulation--which Sony failed to provide between the ECMALST1 microphone and the Sony camera-built-in hot shoe.

Consequently, when you want a stereo mic for use in a somewhat noisy environment, the ECMALST1 will work fine. When you want a stereo mic for use in a quiet environment, you won't be happy with the results. You have to purchase 2 components instead: a hot shoe adapter for Sony's non-standard shoe (or boom stand) and a good quality stereo mic such as the Rode Stereo Video Mic.

No actually auto focus during video on the Alpha line is a key feature. the noise is lowest if you use lenses that have the focus motors in them vs those driven from the body
