After reading all the admiring reviews, some saying "The Jack Bull" was their favorite western, I was looking forward to watching this movie (which I had never heard of before). With high expectations I kept looking for some glimmer of hope in the movie but it just kept getting more depressing. My first sense that this was not going to be what I was hoping for, was when the Jack Bull's wife was senselessly killed by a runaway wagon. OK. Things could get better, there was still hope that he and his son could have happy lives. It only got more depressing after that and the ending (described by other reviewers) was the final letdown. I know life is not always wonderful or fair, but if I want to watch bad things happen to good people, I'll watch the news. If you are thinking of watching this with your grandchildren, a word of warning. Unless they can handle watching a man get hanged in front of his young son (graphic), I'd pick something else.
