4.0 out of 5 stars A Must for Jeff Bridges Fans, September 7, 2009
By
This review is from: The Vanishing (DVD)
I'll make this short and sweet. If you enjoyed "The Big Lebowski" and want to see a different but equally potent side of Jeff Bridges' acting, buy this movie. It is very suspenseful the first time around, and it is great to watch this movie over again for the comedic elements. The only shortcoming in my opinion is that the ending is too abrupt.

Yes, worth watching for both Bridges & Bullock, who coincidentally both finally won Oscars this year; watching Bridges in particular makes you realize why he won the coveted statuette this year, because he has given good & great performances many, many times before ("The Fabulous Baker Boys", the "Big Liebowski" etc); Kiefer Sutherland is good in the beginning, but does not sustain his performance, esp after he meets his new girlfriend, and when you see him here, you don't suspect he'll be as great as he later was on TV's "24"; but with Bullock and Bridges, especially Bridges, you get a taste of the greatness to come from both of them, she the perennial girl next door, and he the versatile and dependable character actor, pretty enuf to be a leading man, but always taking interesting parts, with quirky characters who are not just in the movie to be handsome; having no context that it was once another, perhaps better movie, I watched, absorbed by it, for the first 3/4 of the movie. Jeff's obsession of "what happened to Diane" propelled his character thru the plot, and human curiosity brought me to the end, though it (the way the ending was written and the way it played out) was not as psychological as it was violent (and therefore hackneyed). Just glad I didn't watch it on Halloween!
