Dreamin' With Def Leppard is a set of 12 Def Leppard songs, played in gentler tones, specifically for kids to fall asleep to. Sounds kind of weird, but potentially very very lame. But it's not. The songs are treated with a lot of respect, played on real instruments, and have interesting and intricate arrangements. It starts with Pour Some Sugar on Me, a slide guitar playing the vocal melody. Right away this gives an indication of the kind of attention they paid to these songs to make them not just pleasant for the sleepy child but also a nice treat for the Def Leppard fan of any age. Hysteria follows with a lovely, very dreamy lilt, then Photograph, and if you're not asleep by then, you're probably pretty relaxed . . .
Def Leppard's songs are well-suited to this endeavor. Their songs have strong melodies, and the rhythms translate easily to the softer tones that this album highlights. Def Leppard members Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell even play on this, which helps legitimize this as more than just some novelty or muzak interpretation. Following shortly after the Mirrorball Live disc, this is another nice way to revisit Def Leppard's catalog in a new way.
