This review is from: Natural Hormone Balance For Women: Look Younger, Feel Stronger, and Live Life with Exuberance (Hardcover)
This down-to-earth, practical guide is for women of *all* ages, not just those of us facing a health crisis or lifestage turning point. It is such a relief to know that many chronic, minor but nagging symptoms like insomnia, poor energy, water retention, forgetfulness, and that "morning fog" feeling are not imaginary, and even better, are fixable! This is truly a treasure trove of solid, useful information and easily understood guidelines. Finally, a doctor with common sense!
As an animal advocate, I am especially pleased to see the truth finally told about Premarin, a multi-billion dollar industry that exploits horses for profit, and sends tens of thousands of foals to slaughter every year. Plant-derived hormones are kind to animals, and earth-friendly, too!

Hannah Lewis says:
Thank you, thank you, thank you so very much for bringing up the abuse of horses for the sake of this therapy. God, what did women do years before this so-called inhumane therapy was invented? They coped and found other ways to deal with it!! I went through "the change" and it wasn't fun. But I did it naturally and even though my doctor suggested the horse-based hormone treatment, I quickly declined and went about finding alternatives. And there ARE many. I couldn't see contributing to the suffering and death of animals because I didn't want to exert enough energy to find another way to deal with it. Until we stop mistreating animals on the earth, we will NEVER become the type of beings who will create the kind of earth we "say" we want. That's just MHO. Will buy this book!

J. Schutz says:
They didn't need it b/c their hormones were naturally balanced .... by nature. We only need it b/c of our modern diets of processed food (and especially the xenoestrogens like unfermented soy in all of them), environmental onslaughts, and modernized lifestyles that, while freeing in so many ways, are not what our biology expects (it expects us to be without cycles for decades while we conceive, bear, & breastfeed many children).

I firmly oppose the abuse of horses, as well (let's include prostaglandin while we're at it - I can think of humane ways to gather PREgnant MARe's urINe, but no humane ways to gather semen from an animal), but wonder, how can anything be "bioidentical" if it's from a plant? I'm not a plant, last time I checked. Most plant sources of formerly animal-derived substances are merely precursors (such as ALA for EPA, or beta-carotene for vitamin A), and convert poorly in humans, and in our modern depleted bodies, most of us do not convert at all.

So that leaves us with few options other than finding out how our bodies were designed/evolved to expect to live, and change as much as we can to live accordingly, if we want truly natural, vigorous health.
