Developed by High Moon Studios and published in June of 2010 by Activision, "Transformers: War for Cybertron" is a third-person shooter set on the Transformer's home planet of Cybertron. The story follows the Autobots and Decepticons in their ongoing Civil War and struggle for supremacy of the planet Cybertron, long before their contact with the planet Earth. In this portion of the tale, Megatron the ruthless leader of the Decepticons discovers a powerful and unstable element called Dark Energon with which he plans to corrupt the entire planet of Cybertron. The Autobots, led by the newly appointed Optimus Prime learn of this plot and must make every effort to thwart the Decepticon's plans as it would mean the complete destruction of Cybertron. Here are my thoughts on Transformers: War for Cybertron;
+ Brilliantly varied and well-balanced gameplay.
+ Fantastic voice acting, dialogue and humorous banter.
+ Transforming is extremely fluid, fun and never gets old.
+ Great animations when firing weapons.
+ Transformers are incredibly detailed with constantly shifting mechanical parts.
+ Excellent sound and music composed by Tyler Bates.
+ Cybertron has a nice, dark and gritty feel to it.
+ Plenty of weapons to find and use to dispatch your foes.
+ Fight against historic Decepticons such as Soundwave and Starscream.
+ Some really great graphics and eye-catching explosions.
+ Learn more about the backstory of the Transformers.
+ Play iconic characters such as Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron, Soundwave, Starscream and more.
+ Unique special abilities depending on the character.
+ Epic boss battles.
+ Amazingly fun multiplayer.
Cons <Contains SPOILERS>
- Checkpoint save system.
- Gameplay can feel too linear at times.
- Some ugly texture graphics.
- Would have liked to have had more Transformers to choose from on both sides.
- Most weapons and special abilities are shared between both factions in one form or another.
- Lags a bit when autosaving Checkpoints.
- Zoom in/out auto action while reloading is bothersome and a bit disorienting.
- No character customization system in single player.
- Environments can feel too small, especially when transformed into vehicle form.
- End credits parody, in a word...awful.
- You never get to fight against Megatron or any of signature Autobots.
- Some parts of the action score utilize typical cheesy electric guitar riffs.
- Too short.
Let me start off by being completely honest and stating that I'm NOT and never have been a fan of the Transformers franchise. I've always found the idea of robots transforming into modern day vehicles (which luckily doesn't happen in this game) a bit ridiculous. When I was younger I never really watched the television show as I was more into things like Thundercats, Dungeons & Dragons, He-Man and the like. That being said, "Transformers: War for Cybertron" surprised me in a way which literally turned me into a fan of the series after about only an hour of playtime. The game's ten chapters which are divided equally between Autobots and Decepticons follow the storyline in sequence. This starts with the Decepticons and their pursuit to control Cybertron with the new acquired Dark Energon and ending with the Autobots attempting to cleanse the planet of the corruption. Along the way each mission is varied enough between the different Transformers to choose from, areas to traverse in both robot and vehicle forms, challenging enemies to defeat and epic bosses to battle. The story is your standard good versus evil scenario but it still succeeds in drawing you in to the desperate struggle between the Autobots and Decepticons. "Transformers: War for Cybertron" had virtually everything I look for in a third-person shooter and I'm not ashamed to admit it turned me into a fan of the Transformers franchise. I highly recommend "Transformers: War for Cybertron" to anyone interested in third-person shooter/action games, even those like myself who were/are not fans of the Transformers. This game has completely guaranteed a purchase and play of the sequel "Transformers: Fall of Cybertron" for me.
