A Diamond in the Rough!
This book scores a five for novelty, a four for character interest, but a one for language and style. There is a naivete in the storytelling itself, which mixed with interesting historical detail, allows for certain characters to come into being. After reading of some of these characters' shared suffering, and seeing their different personalities emerge, I was invested in knowing more of their future, the telling of which is often pure fun. Now, the style and language. The reader is hit over the head time and again with intrusive, gratuitous statements reminding the reader of the need to fight for freedom, and it feels rather klunky, such as "THE GOVERNMENT IS FORCE!" This theme is repeated so often one is ripped out of the wonderful story of pirates and reminded the author has a point to make. So while the treasure in the chest may have a few corroded coppers, there are also a few uncut diamonds glittering among them.
