Customer Review

VeggieTales manages to mix the kind of freewheeling, no-holds-barred satire typical of modern cartoons like the Simpsons with an unabashed Christian perspetive. It's a juggling act--they have all the usual hurdles of comedy plus the need to remain on message--and I'm not sure how they pull it off, but those guys are geniuses, and "The Toy that Saved Christmas" is typical of their weird knack for mixing punch line and sermon. It sends up the commercial side of Christmas even more sharply than "A Charlie Brown Christmas" -- ads for the hot new toy, "Buzz Saw Louie," proclaim baldly, "Christmas is when you get things," and "You need more toys!" In the midst of all this naked greed, the characters manage to recapture "what Christmas is all about" (with an unmistakable homage to Charlie Brown Christmas). Of course there's a Silly Song with Larry to mix some pure goofiness into the more pointed humor of the episode. All in all, this special is well worth adding to your traditional holiday viewing list.
