5.0 out of 5 stars This reads more like a Tom Clancy Thriller than a non-fiction!, September 11, 2012
This review is from: 500 Days: Secrets and Lies in the Terror Wars (Hardcover)
Which is both good and bad (but mostly good). Kurt Eichenwald's (you know him as the former NYT reporter and author of "The Informant") new book here is no snooze fest. The story is riveting, fast paced and a real page-turner. Eichenwald's writing comes alive, and honestly at times you forget you are reading a well-researched scholarly history of that period, and think you are reading Grisham.

We have a cast of thousands here, but of course GWB and Tony Blair get top billing. However, their errors and missteps are spotlighted here as well as their other policy decisions. Odd terms like "Enemy Combatant" are penned so that "extraordinary rendition" can be carried out.

This book has it all- secrets, spies, military tribunals, torture, waterboarding, anthrax, bombings, and of course Gitmo.

Many secrets are revealed, the backstory is fascinating. Did you know that while Blair was telling Bush that the UK would support the invasion of Iran, the UK top legal advisor was telling Blair that the attack was illegal?

Sometimes a bit dark and disturbing, but it's all the truth.

Did he take the considerations into account given by AE911 truth (Architects and Engineers for 911 Truth?).
As Columbo would say "too many loose ends that have to be tied up". And the evidence of the crime scene hasn't been investigated but shipped immediately to China to be recycled... The USA doing an inside job to create their New Pearl Harbour, as suggested by PNAC. The script for world domination by the You Es of Aaaaahhh... A nation that has to stay in war, and has been for decades, for own profit and economical reasons. The 911 scam. The axis of terror is not where we are told it is, but right in the heart of the USA.

J.B. Lyle says:
Your Tom Clancy and John Grisham comparisons seem particularly apt to me, since the author writes, as though this were a novel, from inside the heads of so many of the people in this story. The individuals may have had, and may have described to Eichenwald, the thoughts and feelings he ascribes to them, which seem plausible and consistent with their actions. Still I find myself pausing over phrases that purport to tell the reader in so many words what was going through the mind of an individual at a given moment and wondering, "How can the author know that?"

That said, though, you are right: it's a gripping read.

True, you make a excellent point.

blah, blah, blah, blah, blah
I wish all of you conspiracy theorists in the blame America first camp would emigrate to a more honorable and ethical nation.
You obviously don't like this one. Sometimes I think all the USA Haters only stay here because it's so easy to be a tapeworm in the bowels of the USA. (Which is, for the record, the greatest experiment in freedom and self governance in history. Too bad the left has sold our birthrights to perpetuate their hold on our collective throats.
