This review is from: A Secret in Salem (Days of Our Lives Novel) (Paperback)
I had the opportunity to curl up with a good book today, and my immediate choice was to reread "A Secret in Salem", the first of a new set of novels by former "Days of Our Lives" headwriter Sheri Anderson. "A Secret in Salem" will appeal to soap fans and non fans alike, for a soap opera is built on the foundation of compelling stories and relatable characters, and what transfers better to a novel than those? Not largely set in the fictional hamlet of Salem but rather in bustling, real-life Monte Carlo, into which the reader is immediately drawn due to Ms. Anderson's considerable descriptive talents, the story centers around the characters of John and Marlena Black (played for years on TV by Drake Hogestyn and Deidre Hall). Ms. Anderson also introduces the reader to a new set of characters, the Gaines family, and it is the interaction between these two families which forms the core of the story. Ms. Anderson manages to not only introduce the standing "Days" characters to the neophyte reader but also to show an absolute fidelity to the history of these characters as shown on TV, which is a most impressive combination. As the story escalates, each family attempts to recognize and confront its own secrets - and could there be secrets between them as well? The reader will frantically turn pages to find out the answer to that question... and, who knows, maybe even turn on the TV afterward as well. An evocative, thrilling, emotional, irresistible debut from Ms. Anderson. You won't want to miss out.
