Life Changing Book - Evidence That Changed Me From a Pessimist To An Optimist,
This review is from: Learned Optimism: How to Change Your Mind and Your Life (Paperback)
I have always been very skeptical of all "self help" books, believing they were mainly fluff and a waste of time. On a whim I thought I would buy this book since it was written by a psychologist and clinical researcher, and claimed to have evidence that optimists actually do succeed more and accomplish more.
As stated earlier, the author is a psychologist and clinical researcher who has spent the majority of his life studying learned helplessness and optimism. After many clinical trials, he has been hired in many "real world" situations (including Met Life Insurance and sports teams) to improve results and test optimism and success. The results are astounding. The book describes the results using these real-life projects. As evidenced by these studies, optimism helps persons succeed in business, sports, politics, health, school, and literally all walks of life.
The book demonstrated over and over again how I was handicapping myself by being negative and a pessimist. I am a very logical person and it took a book like this, written factually instead of emotionally, to open my eyes to pessimism. Since reading this book, I have dedicated myself to being an optimist, and I must say I have already noticed major differences in my life. I am succeeding at things I never would have even attempted before, and I have become very resilient in non-favorable situations. I have surprised myself over and over again.
Not too many "life changing" books come along, but this book was definitely one for me. If you are a pessimist, this book can transform your life. If you are average or only slightly positive, this book can improve your life greatly. Do yourself a favor and read this book!

Thank you for the interesting and encouraging words I encountered when reading this review. I had my doubts about purchashing this book (I am more of a library-borrower type) but I will definitely order it now!

Not only did this book help me grow from pessimism to optimism but it gives us a "workflow" for solving individual, troubling problems. In this book we're given five questions that help us switch from thinking "I been defeated" to realizing that we probably did better in a specific situation than we would normally have expected. We're not given a phony escape route. Instead we're prompted to get in touch with the reality of a situation which is almost always better than is imagined by our pessimistic personality. I think this process is one of the most important gifts to humanity by science since it improves our everyday lives right inside our thinking processes whether they're buried or conscious.

Dude, no $ HIT !!!
I've borrowed this book from the library 4 times, reading a little further every time, ENJOYING it every time, yet *pessimistically* assuming it will suddenly go downhill before I finish it. Gonna buy it now, and force myself to finish it!

So, does the book actually help you become an Optimist... or does it just present case studies that tell you why you should be one? I already know that I'm a Pessimist and I want to re-train my brain to become more optimistic. I know I am the one standing in the way of my own happiness... I just need help changing the way I think. Thanks.

mr Cook, Just hearing that it took Thomas Edison so many thousands of tries to invent electricity and in my opinion gave the greatest scientific contribution to mankind ever....if it happened just once, how could you nhave thought it was fluff? (smile) That said as you may read a few paragraphs down...what if just one more person believed in the personal computers viability before Bill Gates, or the Auto before Henry Ford? This world might now really BE a garden of eden. So I will pose a question to this thread of people, and I have lived on everything Abnthony Robbins ever write and going all the way back to Napoleon Hill. A bit of fluff in them thar books? Maybe. But.....what if all of us here decided on a joint venture. That we would read this book (you guys have a head start) andi n 40 years we will cut the amount of people in prison by 2/3? Can our odds be any less than if we DID NOT AGREE!!!!! LOL By the way, as a student of how "Good Luck" and lucky things" happen in the most regularity..............they happen when small groups of people all decide to collaborate on one single thing and devote their life to it. THERE IS NOTHING ELSE THAT HAS ANY MORE POWERFUL EFFECT ON GREATNESS! Look at the reverse......could a tiny man with a silly little mustache have almost destroyed the world without an awful lot of collaboration? I leave all of you with the greatest saying to lift any soul I ever heard in my 55 yrs on this planet. "Never think a small group of people cannot change the world. Indeed....it is the only thing that ever has."- Margaret Meade. A woman , no less!!!! LOL So what could be so hard for each of YOU to change? Keep in touch. These words might be up here another billion years or so. Plenty of time to stop feeling sorry or regretful. -)
