5.0 out of 5 stars Works Perfectly With Late 2013 Macbook Pro, April 29, 2014

Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Samsung 28-Inch Ultra High Definition LED Monitor (U28D590D) (Personal Computers)
The monitor worked out of the box at max resolution (3840x2160) on my Macbook Pro, I did not have to make any adjustments or edit any settings, it worked instantly at the correct resolution. I had bought, then returned an ASUS IPS display which I had problems with and had to frequently swap the thunderbolt ports as the monitor would start flickering when I turned it on on occasion. The monitor looks ABSOLUTELY stunning. Text can be a bit hard to read due to the small size (*See update below, OSX 10.9.3 update fixes this problem), but other than that I have no complaints. I bought this monitor on sale for $599 from Amazon.com, absolutely worth every dollar.

Admittedly, I was a little concerned after reading the "early adopter warnings" for Macs in other reviews, so I was pleasantly surprised when the monitor worked perfectly out of the box.

*UPDATE*

I installed the OSX 10.9.3 beta update, and it makes the display scaling work properly. Prior to updating, when I tried to scale my display in the OSX settings, the screen became blurrier, now everything is sharp but the size adjusts accordingly. While OSX says the different scales look like different resolutions based on the size, no matter what I select the monitor identifies the resolution as 3840x2160 at 60hz when I check the monitor information settings. Currently I have the monitor set to the second highest scaled setting which is equivalent to 3008x1692 as I find it the best balance between readable text and fitting more on the screen.

General Pros/Cons:

Pros
+The Monitor exterior is sleek looking and has a very thin profile
+Works Perfectly Out of the Box With New Retina Macbook Pros, the 10.9.3 beta update allows scaling to work properly
+Great bang for the buck for a 4k monitor

Cons
-No built in speakers (I have external speakers but just want to flag for those that want to double this as a tv)
-No infrared sensor (as far as I can tell) so you can't pair remotes to it to double as a TV (which is something I do)
*I didn't take off any stars for these since it was what I expected and would probably add bulk to the the thin profile of the monitor
-Monitor stand is somewhat wobbly and the height is not adjustable
-The Monitor Control is One Button on the Back and Changing Settings Takes a little Getting Used to

I am using the same macbook pro as you but haven't got the monitor yet. Mac os 10.9.3 beta should solve your small text problem. You can download it from https://appleseed.apple.com/sp/betaprogram and please update this review and let me know whether everything works well.

Betaelmer,

I installed the OSX 10.9.3 beta and updated my review to reflect the result. Bottom Line -- Scaling works properly now and the screen doesn't become blurrier as I downscale to make the text larger.

Thanks for your confirmation that the current beta version of OSX 10.9.3 4K support works with Late 2013 Macbook Pro + Samsung U28D590. You are the only person that I know having this setup! Glad these setup works. I think the best article that talks about this feature is from anandtech (http://www.anandtech.com/show/7847/improving-the-state-of-4k-display-support-under-os-x).

I have few additional questions:
1. Do you find Macbook pro fast enough to handle 3200 x 1800 (the second highest resolution that you prefer)? Anandtech claimed the screen render at 6400 x 3600 and I worry Macbook pro isn't fast enough to handle it. If the speed is as good as using the internal Retina display, I will be very happy.
2. You must have use mini-display port to display port cable. Does this cable come with the monitor or you need to buy a third party one?
3. How do you find the screen quality compare to the Macbook pro build-in retina display?
4. Can you use both internal Retina Display and external Samsung Display concurrently? Do you find any performance difference in this setup? Again a lot of pixels to handle on both display. Lastly, you probably won't know the answer. I wonder whether I can connect 2 x samsung monitor using 2 thunderbolt port simultaneously.

1. I haven't noticed a difference in performance -- I did get the top of the line rMBP with discrete graphics (in case you have a different setup). Of course I would never consider gaming in 4k on the rMBP.
2. I had to purchase a mini Display Port to Display Port Cable, I bought on Amazon for about 7-8$. The monitor comes with a display port and HDMI cable.
3. The retina display appears to have slightly more vibrant colors, and greater viewing angles on the monitor tend to wash out the the screen a bit but otherwise the image quality is excellent on both.
4. I use both the Concurrently so no issues here. Not sure on using 2 of the samsung monitors however.

Which miniDP to DP cable did you purchase?

I'm running a MacBook Pro Retina 13" (Late 2013) with the latest 10.9.3 beta and cannot get this thing to display at 3840x2160 @ 60Hz, nor show the scaled options in System Preferences. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong...

Late 2013 macook pro 13" uses Intel graphic but macbook pro 15" use nVidia discrete graphic. Mac pro also has problem support this monitor using amd graphic. Looks like only nvidia driver works well with this monitor on Mac using beta version of 10.9.3. Jka23 is very lucky has the config that's works out of the box. Hope the release of 10.9.3 will fix all problems.

Hi jka23
Do you know if my late 2012 MacBook Pro running 10.9.7 can plug through mini DP to monitor DP in order to get that full resolution? Saw this cable sold on Amazon: Cable Matters Gold Plated Mini DisplayPort (Thunderbolt Port Compatible) to DisplayPort Cable, Black, 6 Feet (101007)
