Great idea; could be better designed.

This review is from: SmartCat Tiger Diner Portion Control Cat Bowl (Misc.)
Our cat has always been fed using the "food silo" type self feeder. Since he is obsessed with food, he is rather large. So we got this to see if he would eat less. The 1-month result: he eats half as much food, and is losing weight.
The bowl is lightweight, so it can easily be knocked over, which the cats did the first night, and the second... until I had to put a weight on top of it.
The food basically gets pulled out of the bowl and drops onto the surface it sits on (floor, table), so the recommendations of a tray with a lip is HIGHLY recommended to keep it somewhat contained.
I also find that you may want to place a non-slip piece of material under the bowl, You know, those rubbery things that go under area rugs? Yeah, that will be a help here to keep it form moving around. Seriously, your cat will quickly figure out that when they knock the bowl around more food comes out. And when it is upside down, is all comes out. Hence the weight on top.
How to make this better? This bowl should come with a tray that it snaps onto so that it can't be knocked over. Also, the lid on the top is useless. It doesn't screw into the bowl and can easily come off when knocked around. Another idea would be to allow a small storage container to screw into the top of it so that you can have the cats self-feed for extended periods of time. No more food would be able to come out, but the length of time before it gets empty would be longer.
Right now, when the bowl is about half empty the food is actually kind of hard to get out and the cats stop using it. This is when they start bugging us, especially at 3am. So, you have to fill it in the morning and at night.
All in all, it seriously helped our cat to shed a pound in one month. We also found that they eat half as much food as before. Which also means half as much in the litter box. All told, this thing will save you money and make for healthier cats. if they could just rethink the design, we would have a 5-star product here.
