Cheap knockoff of the real version!,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I just got this thing in the mail, and it's obviously not from Apple! My friend has the official one, and we compared them closely. It became very apparent that I got a cheap, broken version.
- The one I got HAS NO MAGNET IN THE COVER. It doesn't stay shut, or stay folded, or anything. It doesn't turn the iPad on or off. I can't belief how cheap this was made.
- The inside material is different than the official one. It's fuzzier and more prone to getting dirty.
- The 'Created by Apple' tagline is in a totally different font than the official.
- The hinge is constructed differently and doesn't snap to the side without extra help from me. I have to angle it correctly, then it will snap.

The iPad 3 relies on polarity of the magnet. If the magnet is upside down in the case it will not work. The iPad 2 did not have this issue, polarity didn't matter. My case had the same problem, turn it upside down and run it along the outer edge of the iPad 3 - it works fine. The problem is that the case can't be used this way so it is essentially defective because the magnet is upside down. The real question is why did apple make this change?

Just got mine in the mail after ordering it exactly one month ago. A red flag went up when I noticed that it was shipped from Hong Kong. This thing is nothing but a cheap knockoff. Like others have said there is no magnet, which makes this one not so smart smartcover. The magnet is one one the most important components of the original. It not only turns the iPad off and on, it also allows the cover to stay folded so that it can be used as a stand. Without it, the cover is almost useless. I can't believe I wasted $12 on this thing, I want a refund.

Almost everything Apple makes is made in Hong Kong/China, so that isn't necessarily a red flag, nor does that alone indicate that the product is a knock-off. I don't mean to be a jerk about it, but I'm getting sick of reviews that immediately indicate that because an item is made in China, it's inferior or inherently bad.
