It was a simplier time--the 1960's, when comics would be recalled as a "Silver Age". We looked up into the sky where superheroes flew and a bat signal announced the need for the Dynamic Duo. It was a time when a radioactive spider, a space flight through cosmic rays, or surviving a ground zero gamma bomb transformed ordinary folks into extraordinary characters and incredible reading. The hearts and minds of most of my friends --and me--were controlled by the Big 2--DC and Marvel Comics. If it wasn't Superman by Curt Swan, Spider-Man by Steve Ditko, or the Fantastic Four by Stan and jack--what was there ?
There was TUROK-Son of Stone. A concept and a character so cool, so unlike anything the Big 2 were giving me at that time, that it always made it to the top of the reading pile whenever it was published. Those photo-realistic covers, those dinosaurs, a Native American ( I think !) that was even cooler than Tonto--and Turok especially as seen in this sixth volume of the Archives collection--with issue after issue of beautiful art by Alberto Giolitti was waht made those simple 60's so much fun.
If you are looking for comics that are dark, grity or snarky -then jump into your time machine and set the dial for about twenty years from this series-the only place you will find darkness is in the caves that Turok and Andar explore.
This was a benchmark series--Turok: Son of Stone at Gold Key Comics--and it is deserving of its place in comic book history.
