A heavyhearted weep of a story, the narration of seventeen-year-old Josie who has grown up under the parenting fog of an uptight father, a dogmatic, inhibited physics professor who home schools his kids with advanced commutative theories on life. He mocks and ridicules her and her brother without regard for their wellbeing other than how well they learn and accept his hardened and disjointed philosophy on life. Josie idolizes her older brother, Jack, a psychotic malcontent with overly protective behavior of his little sister but also with overly aberrant affections for her. Josie and Jack are bound by terminal captivation for one another. Jack’s passion for his sister is fleeting, disjointed, and reckless, driven by a mental disorder, gruesome, and violent. He’s handsome, clever, and charming. Josie, an impressionable, confused girl, has fallen into utter acceptance of Jack’s arc of self-destruction. Exceptional writing, outstanding character development. If you like a dive into the psychological make-up of dysfunctional characters, this is the one to dive into. Not a happy read, but fascinating nonetheless. Loved it.
